This podcast has been an invaluable tool for me while learning how to write. Three amazing hosts--Bianca Marais, Cece Lyra, and Carly Watters (a writer/writing instructor and two literary agents, respectively)--blend humor, vulgarity, and advice in this resource that I recommend to every writer looking to grow. While they don't often talk about self-publishing and the fantasy genre, two subjects integral to my writing journey, every episode is chock full of helpful information for writers of all kinds and experience levels.
Alexa Donne is a charming and bubbly writer with loads of information for the novice novelist. My favorite thing about her videos is that she uses many actual examples when she's laying out dos-and-don'ts for the aspiring author, unlike several other sources that just tell you what you need to do without ever actually showing you how! Check out her channel to be informed and entertained all at the same time.
If you're looking for advice about developing magic systems, creating believable fantasy-based cultures, or worldbuilding in general, I would highly recommend checking out Jed Herne's channel. He has so many videos giving you guidelines to follow regarding these subjects and so much more. Complete with examples from his own book, I'm sure any fantasy novelist-to-be will find immense value in the resources that Jed provides!
If anyone has suggested a book about writing to you, it was probably this one. I can't tell you how many times I've heard how great of a resource it is for hopeful writers--and it is! Delve into the psychology behind what makes a story great and use that understanding to elevate your own work. By discovering what draws readers to you, success is within your grasp!
Jack Hart has lots of experience with editing newspaper articles and, while most of his advice is geared toward journalists, I found this book extremely helpful when learning how to write. There's a huge focus on finding motivation and discovering your process paired with a lot of very clever tricks to make your writing jump off the page. It's a must-read!
I read this book at a time when my motivation to write was low. There was so much useful advice in this book, focusing largely on getting your butt in the chair and making the process of doing so significantly less daunting by creating a process that helps to silence the inner critic. On top of that, there were some great pointers for what to do in the editing phase!
